Packaging film roll specification checklist: define the roll, not only the web
A nominal film name, thickness and width do not define a usable packaging film roll. The enquiry must separate nominal dimensions from tolerance, measurement method and sampling—then add the winding, core, orientation, splice and packing details required by the actual converting line.

A tolerance only works when its measurement and acceptance basis are named
Official ASTM and ISO methods distinguish thickness measurement, average roll thickness, length and width. They do not create one universal commercial tolerance for every film. Buyer and supplier still need to agree the specimen, instrument or method, sampling locations, unit, rounding rule and the action taken when a roll is outside the agreed range.

- That nominal thickness is the same as an agreed individual or average tolerance
- That one thickness method is suitable for every smooth, embossed or multilayer material

Start from the unwind and web path
Collect the converter’s core, roll, handling, side-orientation and tension constraints before asking a supplier to propose a roll.
Bind every tolerance to a method
State the unit, method, specimen condition, sampling locations and whether the decision uses an individual, average or another agreed reporting basis.
Design the receiving check
Define which labels, roll maps, visual checks and measurements are reviewed before material is released to production.

ASTM and ISO sources provide measurement scopes, not a default commercial acceptance range for this site. The buyer, converter and supplier must agree values, sampling and disposition. This page does not reproduce the apparatus or procedures of the referenced standards.
07 BUYER QUESTIONS
Resolve the assumptions that make quotes diverge.
01Should an RFQ state only the nominal film thickness?+
No. State the unit, tolerance basis, measurement method, specimen condition, sampling locations and whether an individual or average result controls acceptance.
02Can one thickness method be used for every flexible material?+
Not automatically. Surface texture, embossing, multilayer construction and the purpose of the measurement can affect method choice. Agree the applicable current method with the technical owner.
03Which roll dimensions should come from the converter?+
The converter should confirm core and chuck interface, allowable roll envelope, lifting and storage limits, winding direction, web width, side orientation and any equipment-specific restrictions.
04Why include splices and roll maps in the specification?+
Splices and known defects can interrupt printing, lamination or packing. A clear policy tells the supplier how to construct and mark them and tells the converter what the line must detect or manage.
