Lamination bond strength vs seal strength: keep the interfaces separate

A laminate bond result and a heat-seal result usually belong to different interfaces. Lamination bond or ply adhesion concerns separation between bonded plies; seal strength concerns separation of a seal made between package surfaces. Name the exact interface and method before comparing any force result.

ASTM F904-22 is a Standard Practice for separating plies so that a later bond-strength or ply-adhesion measurement can be made; it does not define that later numerical measurement. ASTM D1876-08(2023) and ISO 11339:2022 are adhesive-bond T-peel contexts for flexible adherends or flexible-to-flexible bonded assemblies, while ISO states that its procedure provides no design information. They do not automatically apply to every extrusion-coating, laminate or coextrusion interface within the F904 separation scope; the responsible laboratory must confirm applicability to the exact construction and interface. ASTM F88/F88M-23 measures the force required to separate a seal and identifies specimen failure mode; its technique and the bending component can affect the result. These scopes do not establish method equivalence or a conversion between reported values.

Method names do not create equivalent results or a LayerSource capability

ASTM F904-22 is the current Standard Practice for separating plies of laminated flexible materials so that later bond measurement can be performed; it is not the numerical bond measurement itself. ASTM D1876-08(2023) is an adhesive-bond T-peel context for relative peel resistance between flexible adherends. ISO 11339:2022, Edition 4, is an adhesive-bond T-peel context for flexible-to-flexible bonded assemblies and states that the procedure provides no design information. Neither adhesive T-peel context automatically applies to every extrusion-coating, laminate or coextrusion interface within the F904 separation scope; the responsible laboratory must confirm the current licensed method's applicability to the exact construction and interface. ASTM F88/F88M-23 covers seal separation force and failure mode; its public significance text explains that support technique and bending can affect the result. 02Does ASTM F904-22 produce a numerical bond-strength value?

No. The current document is a Standard Practice describing how plies can be separated to enable a later bond-strength or ply-adhesion measurement. The responsible parties must identify the applicable measurement procedure separately.

03Are ASTM D1876 and ISO 11339 results automatically interchangeable?

06What closes a laminate bond and seal-strength approval?

The buyer and responsible suppliers must approve separate requirements for the exact interply bond and sealing surfaces, then retain current method, specimen, trial, failure-mode, acceptance and change-control evidence for each.
